About:

I am travelling on Z train Shanghai to Xian and Xian to Beijing booking a soft sleeper. Is there a discount for children ages 6 & 8? also can I book these on this website or do I have to go to the station?

You can book online through travel agency or ticket agency, like,
https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/. If you want to but at the train station, better to book a few days in advance. At present, discountes on children's ticket is according to height. That is to say, if the kids are 110cm-150cm, buy half priced train ticket. One adult can take one kid below 110cm free of charge, except the kid using one sleeper seperately.
