There are many shopping centers in Nanjing Road (The east and west parts), Huaihai Road, around People's Square, Shaanxi South Road, Xujiahui. You can stay in any place among those area.

Shanghai is a bustling metropolis with rampant consumerism. There are many popular malls in different neighborhoods. Plaza 66 is a popular high-end mall. Grand Gateway in Xujiahui and Superbrand Mall in Pudong usually get lots of traffic. IFC across from Superbrand is a new one. Raffles City near People's Square is usually packed with young people. Xintiandi is a bit like an upscale strip mall. And yes, Huaihai Rd is a busy commercial street but most of the malls on that street seem a bit dated.

Since the malls are spread out, it'd probably be most convenient if you stayed somewhere in downtown Puxi close to a metro station.
