I will be traveling from Shanghai to Wenzhou in July, could you please tell me what is the best way of getting to Wenzhou? I was thinking about renting a car and do some sight-seeing on the way, it this a good idea? Could you recommend any companies that I can hire a car from? Another possibility I consider is a train – do I need to book a ticket in advance?

You could go to Shanghai South Railway Station by a D-train ticket. You could check train tickets in http://www.shrail.com/skb_9.htm, however it is in Chinese
There are 15 D-trains between Shanghai-South to Wenzhou, you can get to there and buy a ticket anytime.
