Hello

I am planning to visit Shanghai in May (4-9th) but I am wondering if the EXPO mean it will be difficult to get hotels etc .

Would it be better for me to stay in Hungzhou and do a day trip to visit Shanghai? I am interested in art galleries and history of Shanghai and would like to stay in an easy area to walk around for a woman.

You can find accommodation in Shanghai non-downtown area,it's convenient than stay in Hangzhou.

Hotel will be very hard to book especially in the first month of Expo. If you want to experience Shanghai local culture or history, the Bund( Wai tan) and the communities nearby are the best choice. Yet, however, there will be crowed with people even in normal days, let alone during expo.

I think stay in Hangzhou is better
