I'm planning to go to Beijing for vacation at the end of this year and t his is will be my  first time there. Shall I travel around the city on my own or join tour package organized by my travel agent?

I think you could visit Beijing totally by yourself. Both of the tourism service and transportation of this city are comprehensive, very helpful. Ps: please book a hotel with good location, close to metro line:)
