About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

Hello,
My husband and I are stopping over in Shanghai for around 12hrs on our way from Europe back home to Australia.
We would like to leave the airport to explore and have been looking at Visa's and i dont know if we need one or not because the 3 month single entry seems excessive and the transit visa is confusing.
The application form says that "Australian, NZ, US....and Swedish passport bearers do not need a transit Visa if they transit via Shanghai within 48hrs, whether or not they leave the airport." Does this mean that we dont need a Visa because we are in transit for less than 48hrs? Will we be able to leave the airport?
Please help clarify. Thank you.

Ms.Chana, Australia passport holders don't need a Chian transit visa for the 12hrs stopover in Shanghai, you can leave the airport and visit Shanghai.
