Travel between Shanghai and Hangzhou is fast and easy. There are dozens of bullet trains running between the two cities every day, about 1.5 hours each way. You can take D5553 0833/0959 from Shanghai to Hangzhou, then visit the West Lake, (lunch at Louwailou) the Lingyin Temple and the Six Harmonies Pagoda. Afterwards, take D5688 1946/2134 from Hangzhou back to Shanghai. The train ticket is about RMB70yuan per way.
