for a one day tour at the old summer palace, what attraction is around this area so that i can pair it up?

You may go to visit Beijing Botanical Garden and Fragrant Hills. Also you can go to visit Beijng University and Qinghua University.

The nearby sites are Summer Palace, Peking University and Tsinghua University. You can choose one for visit.
