About:Chinese Consulate in Sydney

Hello,

I have a US passport and my friend has a British passport. We will be in Sydney for a few days 25 Feb -1 Mar and would like to return to London via Shanghai (staying in Shanghai for less than 48 hours evening 6 Mar-morning 8 Mar). We would like to leave the airport, obviously.

1) As an American citizen, do I need a visa for less than 48 hours in Shanghai? If not, do I just need to show my return plane tickets when I arrive in Shanghai airport?

2) Will my British friend need a visa for the same stay?

3) If either of us need visas, will we be able to apply at the Sydney consulate with our UK and US passports?

Thanks very much for your help.

Regards,
Rob

Mr.Rob Superty,
1) USA citizens don't require a visa for less than 48 hours in Shanghai, you need to show your return plane ticket and your passport when you arrive in Shanghai airport.
2) Your British friend need a visa for the stopover in Shanghai
3)Your British friend can apply for the transit visa at the Chinese consulate in Sydney.

PS: Visas are not required of citizens of the following countries, who transit through Pudong Airport or Hongqiao Airport of Shanghai, provided they hold valid passports, visas for the onward countries, final destination tickets and have booked seats, and stay in Shanghai for less than 48 hours: Republic of Korea, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece.
