About:China Visa Exemption

The plane I'll be in will arrive in shanghai jan 12 11:45 pm. I will depart shanghai around 12:15 am on the 15th. Do I need a visa if I am a US citizen with US passport? What if I waited till it is exactly 12 am on the 13th before I go to immigration? Is that considered 2 days if I will be leaving on the 15th? Please I need your advice. I dont want to go to NY just to get a visa if I dont have to. Thank you,

You need to apply for a transit visa.

Since for US citizens, the visa fee for 1-month and 1-year is the same, you can try to apply for a double or multiple-entry visa for the future use.
