About:

Hi! I will be in China between 27th Dec 2009 and 5th January 2010. This is my first trip and I have a lot of questions and no idea who to ask! We have booked our hotels but our travel agent cannot supply us with the names of the hotels and the addresses in Mandarin. I have heard that taxi drivers do not speak or understand English. How do we communicate then? We will be going to Kunming, Guilin and Shanghai. We cannot afford interpretors on this trip. Secondly, how much will the Li River Cruise cost in December? We would like a boat from where we can take pictures with ease. How do we book such a cruise? Thirdly, how feasible is it to travel by the Maglev with a lot of luggage? My mother has osteoarthritis. Is it feasible for her to travel by public transport given the rush and her health? Fourthly, what is the best way to travel to Suzhou from Shanghai and what is the cost of an airplane ticket for this journey. Is it possible to have a day trip to Suzhou? What all can I expect to see in just 1 day? Thank you very much in advance.

So, you just book the hotel but not tour through the travel agency? All right, if they can provide you English names of those hotels, you can tell me and I can tell you the Chinese name and address here in written form. You can print this and show the driver. The cruise ship on LI river: commonly, 225RMB per person boarding at Mopanshan Dock and luxury ticket available at Zhujiang Dock, costing 350RMB. Entering winter, the dry season, the cruise route has be shorttern to 42km (formerly 62km). You can not get to Yangshuo Dock, but Xingping Dock in stead. The ticket price is lower, but I do not know how much it is now. You can book the cruise ship one day before at the central ticket hall at 38 Fu Wang Yuan (福旺苑), nearby 南门桥. You can buy it at hotels too. Or you can buy it when you get to the dock the same day of leaving. Not a big problem for you to take maglev train, but the train can only get to Longyang Road. Suggest you take a taxi to the place you want to afterward. The best way from Shanghai to Suzhou, I think it should be bullet train, for only 30 minutes. So, they are close to each other, flight is definitely unnecessary. Yes, possible to have a day trip to Suzhou. Just see the gardens, such Humbale Administration Garden, etc. Guanqian Jie nearby is a good place to find local food. It is a popular business street.

Thanks! That's a relief. I'm just a little worried b/c they said the East station is away from the tourist area (which is where my friend is at). Would it be hard for me to get a taxi from there especially at 2am?

Thank you so much for your response. I didn't have internet connection all this while and so couldn't check your reply earlier. In answer to your question, yes we are booking our flight tickets and accommodation through our travel agent, but nothing else as the price they are quoting for the tours is at least 5-6 times more than the actual prices. In Kunming I will be staying at the Grand Park Hotel in 20 Hong Hua Qiao, in Guilin I will be at the Guilin Bravo Hotel and in Shanghai, I will be at the Oriental Riverside Hotel. Could you possibly help me out with the names and addresses of these hotels in Mandarin? Also, may I know how to book a chauffered car to pick us up from Kunming Airport and drop us to our hotel? I tried searching for it online but failed. I need to know how to book taxis is advance in Kunming, Guilin and Shanghai. How much of a problem can I expect to face if I don't know any Mandarin? Thanks a ton for your earlier detailed reply

To Roy:
Grand Park Hotel in Kunming: 昆明君乐酒店, 20 Hong Hua Qiao, facing Cuihu Lake Park 华桥20号
You can print this and show it to the taxi driver. Generally, there are limousine service in the airport. you can ask for help at the information desk in the airport. If you do not jion in a tour, it will be a bit difficult for your to find a car, buy ticket, etc. I believe you can get over it, be cautious and patient.

Mr. James, I am so sorry to keep bothering you, but the Mandarin names that you sent, in MS Word, about 70% of the Chinese characters are being displayed, the rest are not. What do I do now? And also are there online booking of cabs in China? With the websites in English? Ever grateful to you for all your patience and assistance.
