Passport expired at May 2010 is okay because usually the limit is 6 months for going abroad.
To apply for visa it's as simple as preparing passport, and colored 2 close-up photographs size 4x6 cm with white background. You can have a travel agent apply it for you which will apply some fees, or you can directly apply it yourself at the China embassy at Mega Kuningan if you're located in Jakarta.
Hope this helps.
