I will be visiting Beijing, Xian and Shanghai in october.  Is it better to visit shenzen from Shanghai or is it better to go to Hongkong and then go to shenzen.

from Shanghai to Shenzhen, direct you no need cross customs, but if you go from Shanghai to HK you need cross custom one time, and another when you go from HK to Shenzhen ... so, it's very easy direct Shanghai-Shenzhen.
