We will want to exchange dollars for CNY for expenses not covered by the tour.  Would you please suggest where we would receive the best exchange rate, at the airport, a particular bank or should we obtain Chinese currency here prior to leaving?

It is quite easy to exchange money in China and the rates will be more favorable, but it is advisable to exchange a small amount of money in your country before leaving. Generally speaking, the bank may have a better exchange rate. But it may take a lot of time to go to a bank. You can also exchange that at the reception of your hotel, which is more convenient, but the rate maybe not as good as at the bank.
