I just want to know how many hours train journey from Shanghai to Beijing so I can plan my visit properly.

If you take the Through Train(with a “T” in the train No.), it takes about 11.5 hours from Shanghai to Beijing. As for the High-speed Train(with a “G” in the train No.), it takes about 5 hours. If you take the bullet train (D series), it takes about 8-9 hours.
