Hi, David. To answer all you questions as I can. Firstly, you need a visa to Shenzhen. Will you enter via Hong Kong?! I think it is not available to have a on-the-spot visa at Lok Ma Chau. Shenzhen Security Authority only has on-site Chinese visa service at Shekou, Huanggang, Shenzhen Airport, Luohu, Futian, Shenzhen BAy, Fuyong, Wenjindu and Shatoujiao (last three are ferry termials). Usually the on-site visa is about 150 HKD and average time to pass the border is within half a hour. Good Luck!

Hi David,

Yes, I'm from the Philippines, but I'm working in Shanghai, and so, I have a residence (or Z) visa in China.

If you're in Manila, you should go to the Chinese Embassy at the World Trade Center in Makati (not sure if I remember the building's name correctly), and get an application form for a visa (you'll be asked what type of visa you want). For L or tourist visa, you will need to show them your return air tickets, and hotel bookings. Be there early because they only give numbers until 11 A.M., and expect to be there for the rest of the day - unless you're just getting the form - for the visa application.
