What natural barriers made following the Silk Road difficult?

Well, the natural conditions along the silk road is not very friendly, as the climate changes, many rivers were dried up or changed the course, deserts became larger and more powerful, and the rainfalls were less and less, which made the silk road difficult to walk through.
