I have an 8 immortals rug. It was left to me by my grandmother. My grandfather bought it for her in Panama I believe around 1908. It's 73" wide by 30" high, black background featuring the 8 faries, 2 attendants or guards and a God in the center. On the left, 5 carictors in gold, then 4 of the 8, each having it's own representative sign above it's head, then in the center the 3 figures and 5 charictors above their heads, then to the right the other 4 faries and their corrisponding signs. to the right of them, 4 more charictors in gold and beneath them a block containing a charictor representing a seal or signature, I'm guessing the signature of the artist. The figures are done in releaf that stands out from the background approximately 1/4 ".
I have no idea how old the rug was at the time it was purchased. I do know that when the great depression hit they borrowed $2,000. against it to pay the taxes on the family farm in Caswell County N.C. How much is it worth today? I've been trying to get it apprased but haven't been able to so far. When the "Anteques Roadshow" folks were in Manassas Va. I showed it to them but they wouldn't even venture a guess. They had nobody who knew enough about Chinese antiquity. They said only, "Well, it's certainly worth at least $2,000." WELL NO $#!%!!! The rug has been kept in a camfor box when it wasn't hanging on the wall. It's never been on tne floor except to roll it out to look at it and it's rarely ever seen direct sunlight. The cotton frenge accross the top and bottom has yellowed with age (I'm guessing it was white.) but the rug itself is purfect. Not a moth hole, snag, stain or anything. As far as I know it's never been cleaned. I need a value on it so I can have it insured. So far I'm not having any luck.
