We will be in Hong Kong over the weekend and were looking at going to Shenzhen for the day.Is it possible to get a visa on arrival in Shenzhen?  If so do you need a passport photo?

yes you can get a visa at the boarder. you need to RMB , chinese money , thing it was 140 rmb and they wont take hK $. you have to fill out a form and wait in line , took about 5 minutes., there is a money converion place as you cross the boarder. Happy shopping
