It is known as the yellow river because the rocks it runs through(underground) and runs over(as a river)are rich in a type of rock crystal known as loess. this 'loess' turns the colour of the river to a sort of ochre yellow colour - which is where it gets its name from. When the loess is dropped by the river it creates natural dams which makes it flood - the worst flood being in 1938 when it took the lives of some 2,000,000 - 4,000,000 people.
