If your total transit time in China is shorter than 24 hours, you do not need any kind of visa because your transit will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit scheme. Transit time is counted from your first scheduled arrival (landing) in China until your final scheduled departure (take off) from China. It is important to understand that it is the scheduled times that count. If shorter than 24 hours, no visa is needed. There are several types of transits: 1. A transit where you travel on a single ticket and your layover is a short one and you do not have to leave the airside. This is the easiest because no formalities have to be performed at all. 2. A transit that has longer layover at one airport and maybe even the need to collect & re-check your luggage at the airport. 3. A transit that involves two or even three airports in China where it is definitely essential to formally enter China in order to perform collection of your luggage and re-check it and a travel on a domestic flight between two Chinese airports. In general, this is all fine and acceptable under 24 hour visa free transit scheme, but again, if your total transit time is shorter than 24 hours. If you want to be 100% certain, I advise you to share with us your entire flight itinerary allowing us to tell you precisely what will you have to perform during your transit, you are welcome to do that. In any case, if a transit time is shorter than 24 hours, you will not need a Chinese visa of any kind.
