About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel

Is the following itinerary acceptable: US>Shanghai>US? Or do we need to go to another location? We are coming from the US to Shanghai for a business trip. I am unsure if I need to apply for an M Visa.

US - Shanghai - US is not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme because it is not in line with the basic 240 hour visa free transit rule. The basic rule states that the immediate points, before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). I would suggest you to try to insert a third country or eligible territory and to create your itinerary as an eligible one. For example, US - Canada - mainland China - US, or US - mainland China - Japan - US. It can be done with a little bit of research. Otherwise a visa would be required. I wish you to create an eligible itinerary.
