About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US-Beijing-Guangzhou/Shenzhen-HK

Plan to fly from US and Beijing. Then either fly or take train from Beijing to either Guangzhou/Shenzhen. Then finally take train from Guangzhou/Shenzhen to HK. Would that qualify for the 240 visa free?

A friend from the US was denied to board the plane at San Francisco to Guangzhou because he only had a ferry ticket from Shekou to HK. They had him purchase a different ferry ticket from Shekou to Macau before he was allowed to board the international flight from San Francisco to Guangzhou. Any idea why the ferry ticket from Shekou to HK would not qualify for the 240 visa free transit?

Amy, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. There is no doubt about it. Just one detail here. You will have to buy your train ticket from Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Hong Kong even before you depart from US toward mainland China. It is highly advisable to have that ticket or better to say ticket booking confirmation printed out and at hand in both US and in Beijing when you land there. As far as your friend is concerned, I am afraid that he was flying US - Guangzhou via Hong Kong. If this is the case, he was really not able to travel US - Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong. So, they made him book an eligible alternative so his final itinerary looked as US - Hong Kong - mainland China - Macau. The immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In usual circumstances, a ferry Shekou to Hong Kong is definitely and undeniably an eligible way to exit mainland China toward Hong Kong. However, taking a train, as you are planning, is definitely more convenient than taking a ferry. Have a nice visit to China.
