Travel US to Hong Kong to Guangzhou to Shanghai to HK without visa?

Can I travel from US to HK, take ferry to Guangzhou, travel to Shanghai, then fly back to HK, using 240-hour visa free option?

HK – Guangzhou – Shanghai – HK is not qualified for the 240h visa free transit because you come from and head to the same region before and after Mainland China, that is, HK.

Maybe you can go to Macau from Shanghai first and then transfer to HK; in this case, you will be covered by the 240h visa free policy that you can enjoy your trip without a visa.
