China Visa

I have a US passport. I am planning flying from San Francisco to Hong Kong for 3 days and take a train to China for 9 days. Afterward I will take a train to Hong Kong and then fly back to San Francisco. Do I need a China visa?

I'm afraid you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance because your itinerary HK – Mainland China – HK does not work for the 240h visa free transit.
