About:China Visa Application in UK

Travelling around

I am a U.K. citizen. I am arriving in Chengdu from London in May and I am on a tour from Chengdu to Xian and then Beijing. I then fly to Chiang Mai in Thailand. Am I covered by the 240 hour visa free policy and how easy is it? Terrified I end up for hours in the airport! I also fly from Xian to Beijing. Would that cause a problem? Getting a visa is expensive and difficult in the U.K. as I am hours away from the visa centre.

Your route is London – Chengdu – Xi’an – Beijing – Chiang Mai, right? It’s eligible for the 240h visa free transit, and how you travel between permitted areas in Mainland China during transit does not matter. Just apply for a 240-hour visa-free stay permit with your passport and air ticket to Chiang Mai upon arrival in Chengdu, and then you can explore the 24 provinces in Mainland China freely. Happy journey!

That’s interesting because Trailfinders told me this week that because I am taking an internal flight I can’t use the 240 Visa free transit scheme. It seems to be little understood so I think I’m just going to get a visa. Edinburgh is a nice place to visit! Thanks for replying.
