About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour Beijing transit free

I am planning to explore beijing for three days on my way to Japan.

I arrive at 3.10pm on the 4th April and fly to Tokyo at 2.20pm on the 7th April. I have a UK passport. Would I qualify for the transit visa?

On my way back i will be staying in Beijing for less than that 28 hours for layover. Is that also ok?

Yes, your itineraries are definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. It is important to understand that the schemes called 72 and 144 hour visa free transit are scraped and a new one, called 240 hour visa free transit is now relevant. Just one tiny detail. You have written that your layover in Beijing will be less than 28 hours. So, if it is less than 28 hours, but longer than 24 hours, it will be also eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but if it is less than 24 hours, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. Not a huge difference, but during your return you can remain at the transit area of the airport if your layover is a short one (up to 6 - 8 hours) and in that case, you do not need to perform any formality and you do not need to fill out any forms, but if your layover is longer than, say 8 hours, you will maybe want to exit the airport and in that case, you will repeat the same procedure as if you were traveling on 240 hour visa free transit and that means approaching the 24/240 hour visa free transit, obtain a temporary entry permit and exit the airport. In any case, you are good to go and I wish you pleasant journeys.
