Dmitry, 5 years old needs a passport in the same way as the adult passengers do. In reality, there is no difference.
You should be aware that if you really want to use 144 hour visa free transit, you will really have to be in a transit through Chengdu based on the formula:
Country A - Country B (China) - Country C
Also, you are not allowed to have any additional landing of any kind within mainland China beside Chengdu. An eligible itinerary would look like this:
Moscow - Chengdu - Hong Kong
Like this you can enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in wider Chengdu area. However, if your itinerary is:
Moscow - Beijing - Chengdu - Hong Kong
