About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stopover in country of origin

UK Citzen, Going to Xi'an for a couple days from Hong Kong then going to UK. The flight back to UK has a stop over in Hong Kong. Would this be okay?

No, this would not OK. The very basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit clearly says that your mainland Chinese stop has to have its immediate points before and after in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, you are attempting a route that has Hong Kong as both immediate points, before and after and that is considered as a round trip and not as a transit.

You are advised to try to alter/adapt your itinerary in order to have two immediate points in two countries/eligible territories.
