About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arrive from UK at Shanghai Pudong Airport, take cruise departing same day to Japan

Hi,
We will arrive from UK to Shanghai Pudong Airport and then look to travel to Shanghai Cruise Port for a cruise to Japan which departs same day. The cruise is all fully booked. After 7 days the cruise arrives back in Shanghai, however we are taking a further cruise on the SAME SHIP for 4 days to South Korea and Japan again. We then sail back to Shanghai at the end for disembarkation. Our flight back to UK is that same day and we need to travel from the cruise port to the airport.
Are we best to seek 24 hour or 144 hour visa free transit when we first arrive? Does the process take a long time?
How are we placed when we arrive back in Shanghai after the first 7 day cruise?
What do we need at the cruise port to be able to leave it and go to the airport at the very end?
Thanks.

Graham, if I understand you clearly, your whole itinerary will look exactly like this:

UK - Shanghai - Japan

Japan - Shanghai - South Korea - Japan

Japan - Shanghai - UK

If your itinerary is presented correctly especially as far as the immediate countries before and after Shanghai are concerned, your entire itinerary is definitely visa free.

So, when you arrive in Shanghai for the first time, the first thing you will do is to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit where you will apply for a temporary entry permit in order to be allowed to exit the airport. This application is free of any charge and here you will present your flight and cruise tickets. Based on the length of your entire layover in Shanghai, you will be eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit. If the the layover is shorter than 24 hours it is 24 hour visa free transit and if longer than 24 hours than 144 hour visa free transit. In any case, this does not change anything to you. After your permit is granted, you will exit the airport and head to the hotel or to the cruise port.

You will do exactly the same procedure when you arrive by your cruise in Shanghai and that means approach the transit counter, apply for a temporary entry permit and exit the cruise terminal.

This is basically everything you should do as far as the formalities are concerned and you do not have to bother yourself too much about it. It is just important that the itinerary as I have presented it above is exactly as presented. The immediate points before and after Shanghai have to be in two different countries. If so, just proceed with absolute peace of mind. Have a nice journey.
