Rudolf, your itinerary, if it does not imply some other landings within mainland China, is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Upon landing in Chengdu you will immediately approach to a transit counter where you will present your flight tickets and your accommodation booking confirmation if you plan to have a good night rest during those 22 hours. In reality, you will apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. This application is free of any charge. When your permit is granted, you will proceed toward the immigration to enjoy your layover time in Chengdu. Basically, that's it.
