Single entry visa

I am going to start work on a cruiseship and I was told to apply for a single entry visa. My contract is 8 months. Will I be able to work 8 months on a cruiseship without overstaying my visa?

In your case, I suppose you are going to apply for a work visa. After entering China with the single-entry visa, you need to change it to a temporary stay permit within 30 days upon arrival. With the temporary stay permit, then you can exit and enter China as you like within the validity.
