About:Terracotta Army, Xian

Each plate of armour has a number of pips or rivet heads on it

What do these pips denote. They vary in number from none to nine ,or more.
. There seem to be no two plates the same in any row.

As I know, they are not rivet heads but knots, which connect the armor plates together.
