Is it viable to come with sleeper train in the morning and then proceed directly by bus from Xi'an North train station to see Terracotta army? Provided there would be someplace on the train station to leave the bags?

Yes, there are direct buses to Teraocotta Army at North Bus Station on North Square and on the south square there is a place to store your luggage.
