You should prepare the application one month before your trip. First, fill in visa application form online, print it out and sign it, then prepare all the requirements, then submit the materials to the consulate-general or the embassy according to your location and the consular districts.

Passport with at least 6-month validity
Visa Application Form and Photo
Proof of legal stay or residence status
Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.
