Expired passport

Hi I would like to seek your kind advice as mine China friend passport has been expired long time and he didn't having working permit in Malaysia. Presently he is planning going back China. So does he need to renew his passport first or he can buy air ticket and direct going back China?

He needs to renew her passport first at the China Embassy in Malaysia. He can download 中国领事 APP to submit a renew application online.
