About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit visa

hello i’m in mainland china with my son, i have a 30 day one time entry visa to china and my son has unlimited entry visa for 3 years, we are thinking about leaving china to hong kong, however our flight home to australia is from chengdhu china, we booked return tickets melbourne to chengdhu and cannot change these flights. I’m currently about 18 days in and wondering if i can do the following.

1- apply for my 90 days visa free as an australian citizen/passport and enter hong kong from mainland china
2- Apply for 72 hour visa for myself to fly hong kong - chengdhu - melbourne (last flight is already confirmed & booked) happy to stay 24-48 hours to be safe

my mainland china via ends after my return flight but it’s single entry, is there any difference for me because im in mainland china already - i would love to visit HK while im here im so close to it

Brayden, your situation is really simple.

It is true that your single entry visa will expire when you leave mainland China to Hong Kong, but as you have planned, you will fly from Hong Kong to Chengdu and then, after several days, take a flight from Chengdu to Australia. Itinerary of this kind will allow you to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit and not 72 hours. Also, I encourage you to use correct terminology because it is not a "transit visa", but visa free transit or in other words, there is no visa at all of any kind. As you can see, you are free to stay in wider Chengdu area for up to 6 days absolutely visa free.

It is important to emphasize that your flight Hong Kong to Chengdu does not have any additional landing within mainland China or to be precise this flight has to be a nonstop one. Also, your flight out of China has to be Chengdu - Melbourne without any additional landing within mainland China. I assume your flight will be with Sichuan Airlines since it flies Chengdu - Melbourne nonstop.

Basically, this is it and as you can see, your situation is easily resolvable without the need to obtain any kind of visa. Enjoy your stay in China.
