Sharon, if your layover in Beijing is shorter than 24 hours, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. However, if your layover in Beijing is longer than 24 hours, a visa obtained in advance is a must. If you travel on a single ticket, you will just exit the plane in Beijing and will continue walking toward your flight for Macau and during that process you will not be a subject of immigration and/or customs control, but you will just cross a security check. If not traveling on a single ticket, but separate ones, you will approach the transit counter immediately upon your landing. At the transit counter you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets. This application is a formality, free of charge and and after a short check, you will be granted a permit to cross the immigration and to collect your luggage in order to make a check-in for your flight to Macau. Both cases are covered by 24 hour visa free transit and no visa is needed.
