About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Same itinerary or separate

Can I enjoy the 24-hour TWOV if I transit through a Chinese city with flights in two separate itineraries?

For example:

KIX -> to CAN (itinerary A)
(spend 23 hours in Guangzhou)
CAN -> HKG (itinerary B)

My only concern is that the airline in Osaka (KIX) might deny me boarding based on the premise that I do not have a valid visa for China and the fact that my second flight out of China, although within the 24-hour rule, is not under itinerary A.

Thanks in advance.

The basic rule of 24 hour visa free transit does not require that you use a single (through) ticket. In other words, you are fine to travel on separate tickets and on unrelated airlines as long as your itinerary is an eligible one. Your itinerary, under the condition that you do not have any other landing within mainland China, is definitely eligible and you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit scheme.

If the authorities in Osaka present their ignorance, just point them kindly to take a look at Timatic. Timatic is the ultimate tool and is used exactly in the cases of this kind. If the person in charge is not willing to do that, you insist to talk to a supervisor and again, point them to Timatic. The only thing they can see there is that you are allowed to travel through China visa free.

One more detail... In order to be eligible for this itinerary, you will have to fly from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, but I assume that you know this detail. Also, you should print out your flight tickets and have them at hand for easier handling and you should also print out your hotel booking in Guangzhou to present it upon your landing in Guangzhou. You will be fine.
