Just to continue what Molly has mentioned... In order to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit you will have to fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. There are flights between two cities, so this detail is not a problem. You can also stay at private apartment, but you should just take care that you register yourself at relevant PSB (Public security bureau) at most 24 hours after your arrival in China. When you approach 144 hour visa free transit, you will supply them with the address, contact of Chinese person where you will stay with and his/her phone number. Within 24 hours that person will accompany you to PSB.
For your return back, you will use a ferry from Shenzhen port of Shekou to Macau. Please, have in mind that you will have to have a ticket for the ferry bought even before you depart to mainland China in hard copy, ready to present it to relevant authorities. Also, you will have to take exactly that ferry you have bough your ticket for. You will buy your ferry ticket through TurboJet company website.
