Can I give to Parents of my fiance RED Envelope for New Year?

Hello :-)
Is it acceptable during the Chinese New Year to give a Red Envelope to the Parents of my (Chinese) girlfriend?
I would like to show them my respect and generosity

Traditionally, it's the elders who give red envelopes to later generations. I advise you to buy them some gifts rather than giving red envelopes.
