72 hour visa-free entry

I hold a US passport and I'm planning to go to Malaysia -> Shanghai (probably around 48 hours) -> Malaysia. Is this eligible for the for the visa-free entry? I'm going back to the country I came from, but it's not my home country so I'm not sure if it's considered a third destination.
