What kind of visa do I need to visit my American son attending university in Beijing?

Can I just apply for a tourist visa to visit my son? Do I have to have flight and hotel when applying for visa?

Yes, a tourist visa is enough. You don't need a flight or hotel order if your son provide you an invitation letter. Please note that the letter should include the following information:
1. The applicant's information, including full name, gender, and date of birth.
2. Information on the planned visit, including arrival and departure dates, place(s) of visit.
3. Information on the inviter, including name, contact number, address, official stamp, and signature of the inviting individual.
