About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Could I go outside the airport?

Hello, I am a Thai passport holder who will have an 11-hour transit at Shanghai Airport. I contacted the China Eastern Airlines Thailand office to inquire about leaving the airport during my layover. However, they informed me that if my luggage is checked through, I cannot go through the immigration. The airline stated that it is an airport rule for passengers to stay with their luggage at all times. I am unsure whether this information is accurate. Is it truly necessary for me to stay with my luggage? Also, how would the airline know if I leave the airport? Can you please provide me with more information on this matter?

Peach, the situation is very simple...

You will travel through Shanghai absolutely visa free and in other words, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit.

Now, all those who would like to exit the airport and to explore the city for several hours are advised to approach 24/144 hour desk and to apply for a temporary entry permit. This permit comes for free, but its issuing always depends on discretion of the relevant airport officials. They can, but they also can deny the issuing of this permit. They will never issue a permit for those having less than 6 hours of transit time, but if I were, I would definitely try. There are no expenses and the worst thing that could happen is that you just continue to wait for your onward flight at the airport.
