Is it always required to have a fingerprint done for a 10 year visa to visit a relative in China? Is it still a "tourist" visa?

I'm afraid so. Applicants should have their fingerprints done when submitting the application.
As for the type, it depends on your purpose of coming to China. There is also M for business, Q for family reunion and more.
