if i cannot pick up my passport (with my new z visa) on the date it's ready, what can i

Question

I may be in a situation where I will not be able to pick up my Z visa and passport on the day it is ready.  Can I request it is mailed to me?  Are there visa/courier services who will pick it up and mail it?  How long with the Chinese Consulate in NYC hold it.

The mail service is not provided. You may ask your family or friend to pick it up on your behalf. Or you can pick it up on your own some days later than the ready date. The consulate usually keeps the passport for several days for free.

I am sorry.  I am now confused.  The school supporting my work visa recently told me that I cannot drop off or pick up the documents myself at the Chinese Consulate in NY.  They told me that they believe that due to COVID all originals must be mailed to the consulate, and that the consulate would mail them to an address provided.  Your answer seems to indicate differently.  Please advise.  Thank you.

Your answer seems to indicate differently. FROM YOUR RESPONSE I AM UNDERSTANDING THAT SOMEONE MUST PICK UP THE COMPLETED PASSPORT IN PERSON.  Please advise. Thank you.
