Can an engaged woman stay or reside in China with her fiancee if he has an eligible resident visa?

I'm writing a novel about a woman who works in China but gets her work visa revoked. In order to stay in the country she says she's engaged to another American who has an eligible resident visa and is working there. Would that be legal in China? Could she stay anyway (under his visa) or would she have to leave the country immediately?

Before she gets married to the American man, she cannot stay under the man's visa. If she does not have other valid visas at present, she needs to leave the country immediately.
