student residence permit from tourist visa

Hi. I am currently on China on a tourist visa. Provided with documents from the university where I got accepted with scholarships, it possible to get a student residence permit in China? So that I won't need to go back to my home country, get a X visa then apply for a residence permit in China. Thanks
