Stay visa when between jobs

Hi
If my current employer cancels my work permit and my temporary residency permit (which is valid until 2021), I have heard that you can then apply for a stay visa/stay certificate which should be valid for 30 days.

Let's say the current employer drags its feet to supply the letter of cancellation and recommendation letter that the new employer will need to apply for the new work permit and the new temporary residence permit, would one be able to extend the stay visa/certificate for let's say another 30 days or 2 months like with the other visas during this epidemic?

I am very scared to start this process, as there is no option now to do a visa run and return to China.

It's possible to get a 30-day stay visa after your residence permit is cancelled, but not likely to get two months.
