Switch from L visa (tourist) to X

I'm currently stuck in China with my multiple-entry tourist L visa for USA citizens. My stay's been extended for 60 days already plus 30 days more at the Public Security Bureau. I can't go back home due to personal reasons and I can't risk exiting-reentering though HK or Korea. Can I apply for an X visa for studying while being in the country?

You can have a try, but the chance to get the X visa is not very big.
